Getting to IrelandÂ
If flying in from and/or returning directly to Canada, you will want to book flights through Dublin Airport.
Air Canada offers direct flights four days a week between Vancouver or Montreal and Dublin.
WestJet offers direct flights three days a week between Calgary and Dublin.
A choice of Aer Lingus, WestJet and Air Canada offerings provide daily flights options from Toronto to Dublin.Â

If arriving from or departing for mainland Europe you may find it easier to fly through Ireland West Airport (NOC), located in Knock.
This airport is about 40 minutes from Markree Castle by car/taxi.
Ryan Air and Aer Lingus (among others) offer daily direct flights from London. Â

From DublinÂ

Driving: Markree Castle is about a 2.5h drive from Dublin Airport or City Centre. It is an easy drive along a well-maintained highway, with plenty of options to stop off for breaks along the way. If you plan to rent a car, see our notes [below] with tips on renting a car in Ireland.

Train: There are multiple trains daily from Dublin (Connolly Station) to Sligo (MacDiarmida Station), just 15 minutes' drive from Markree Castle. The train ride takes around 3h15min and costs around €15-18 one-way for an adult fare. Train tickets can be booked through the Irish Rail website, here: https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ieÂ
If you plan to take the train, let us know and we can help coordinate a ride from the train station to the castle or other nearby accommodation, and if need be you can always grab a taxi at the station.

From Knock Airport

Driving: Markree Castle is about a 40-50min drive from Knock Airport. It should be possible to get a taxi directly from Knock to Markree Castle or other nearby accommodation. If you plan to rent a car, see our notes [below] with tips on renting a car in Ireland.

Bus: the Bus Éireann Expressway Route 64 runs from Knock Airport to Sligo town. The ride takes approximately 1h15min, and costs around €13-18 one way for an adult fare. Upon arrival in Sligo town, you can coordinate a ride or taxi to Markree Castle or other accommodation in the area.Â

Taxi: there is a taxi stand at the airport. It is approximately a 40-50 minute drive and would be expected to cost between €60-€80 one way from Knock airport to the castle.
Rental Car Information:

Insurance Coverage: Please note that if you wish to waive the car rental agency insurance policy due to having coverage via a credit card, all Irish car rental agencies will require a letter from your credit card provider confirming insurance coverage for the Republic of Ireland. To obtain this, you may need to call your bank or credit card provider, who will email you a letter which you can present at the rental agency when picking up your rental car.

Additional Fees: Some major highways in Ireland charge tolls on portions of the road. The tolls are a few euros each and are mostly paid by cash/card at the booth as you drive through, though for some of the roads a bill will be sent to the rental car agency, which they will pass on to you on your final invoice when you return the vehicle. Your rental car agency may also charge you a fee if you choose to take your rental vehicle into Northern Ireland.Â
